The Institute of Corporate Law and Corporate Governance (the "Institute") was established in 2000 with the objective of developing a system for the protection of investors' rights and improvement of the corporate governance in Russia. The Institute was founded by Alexander Radygin, doctor of economics, professor, member of the Board of Directors and the Academic Board of E.T. Gaidar Economic Policy Institute, Director of the Institute of Applied Economic Research and Dean of the Economic Department of the Academy of National Economy of the Russian Federation Government, and Dmitry Vasiliev, the first Chairman of the Russian Federal Commission for the Securities Markets. Mr. Radygin is a leading expert in the field of the corporate governance, widely reputed both in Russia and abroad. Mr. Vasiliev is credited with the establishment of a civilized stock market in Russia and is known for his active position in matters of observance of investors' rights.
The Institute's mission is to foster initiatives aimed at the improvement of corporate law and corporate governance and the protection of investors' rights.
Principal areas of the Institute's activities are the following:
- Corporate law and corporate governance;
- Law-drafting and legislative activity;
- Management and financial advice;
- Interaction with legislative bodies and federal executive authorities.
As an independent organization, the Institute is involved in drafting legislative initiatives, assessment of institutional and legal reforms and other activities of the Government of Russia designed to improve Russian corporate governance practices.
In the context of a project involving the design of a methodology of calculation and practical implementation of the "Corporate Governance Quality Rating (CORE-rating)" information system, the Institute received advisory and methodological support from such organizations as the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the International Financial Corporation, George Soros’s Open Society Institute, State Street investment bank and other international entities.
